An armored train passes through a strike settlement under gunfire, leaving a miner dead. Two union figures are killed on courthouse steps. A Black household employee is convicted on circumstantial evidence in a socially explosive murder. Harlan County miners receive life sentences when no jury can identify the fatal shooter. Men posing as FBI agents enter a doctor’s home. An Ohio professor walks out of prison and disappears. A death-row conviction is reversed after hypnosis-tainted testimony and withheld evidence.

Some cases ended in convictions. Others ended in acquittals, reversed verdicts, unresolved disappearances, or files that remain open.

Drawing on court records, appellate opinions, government hearings, prison files, coroner findings, contemporary newspapers, and archival sources, Julian Maddox reconstructs fifteen cases without invented dialogue, composite characters, or false certainty.
